The Revolution of 2022

                                                                     Revolution 2022

America the Beautiful should perhaps be replaced by the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Julia Ward        Howe was the composer of this patriotic song and was also a leader of the women's suffrage movement of 1868 as well as a staunch promoter of international peace. She did not have any support in these endeavors from her husband, Samuel Gridley Brown, who had funded militant abolitionist John Brown. Was he jealous of her talents? Or was her place in the home with no personal opinions? How far we have come and now, 150+ years later, we have now gone backwards after all the hard work and sacrifice of many to move us all forward. Men, women and children of all colors, religious or non religious beliefs should have the same rights as citizens of this great, or used to be, country.

On June 24th, 2022, 5 US Supreme Court Justices have sent us backwards by decades by overturning Roe V Wade. A decision not based on integrity or based or any binding legal findings that have anything to do with the justice system, rather based on their own religious and political bias. Not surprising who appointed two of those justices. I know that there are those who will vehemently disagree with my opinion and my sense of injustice and feeling of utter disgust at this travesty.

Am I pro abortion? No, I am pro choice and yes, there is a difference. This is not a black and white issue here. There is now speculation that some would like to go after contraceptives, the morning after pill etc. Not everyone feels the need to increase the already increasing population as Amy Coney Barrett seems to with her plentiful brood but I would also fight for her freedom to do so. Would she like it if her freedom to reproduce as many children as she wants was taken away? This decision was the final straw for me. I have never had an abortion nor do I hope anyone feels the need to have one but I do not know the circumstance of those who choose to do so.

I know who is gloating over this. Someone is preparing for 2024 and will do whatever it takes to place himself along with his forever brooding spouse into our nations capitol again. Don't like Joe Biden? You have that right, he is getting too old to run again and personally I would even campaign for Pete Buttigieg because intelligence, and integrity and decency plus youth would be refreshing. Oh but he is a card carrying member of the LGBTQ community and there are those who could not sleep at night with a gay man at the helm of this nations capital, you know that building bought and paid for by we the people which was attacked by lunatics wielding weapons, smearing their nastiness upon the walls of OUR nations capitol, in which 5 people died and more would have if not for some brave law enforcement who risked themselves to save those in the sights of these sub humans. Those of us with any common sense know who was behind this.

Do I hate those who support a name I will not mention? No, I leave that to those who would attack me for stating my opinion concerning my disgust. I do not hate republicans and I am moderate not liberal and I have tried to silence myself but the effects of this person's reign has had aftershocks that are not going away. He has given permission to people who need little encouragement to be the worst they can be. White supremacists  are good people according to him, Proud Boys? What are they proud of? Just a bunch of bullies with guns. Likes and even respects Putin. In all honesty, this person is not even a republican. Do you know he financially backed Hillary Clinton in the 2008 election? He is his own party and cares only for himself. I have actually voted for a republican or two in the past but extremism on either side accomplishes nothing. I have never been this worried for this country. Never. It is actually hard for me to celebrate Independence Day this year. I for one, refuse to have my rights and freedoms taken away and I'm done being silent while inwardly fuming.

I will not turn away from family or friends for differing political or personal views but when hatred and personal attacks come into the conversation, I'm done. I do not bring up politics at personal or social gatherings because I respect that this is not appropriate, I also do not want to raise my own ire as I am formidable when I feel there is injustice. I want this country to care about everyone not just an elite few. I want women to continue to have the rights their ancestors fought so hard for. That all sides of the political spectrum can learn to work together for the betterment of all Americans. I also include children in all of those rights. If I had the power to do so, no adult would place their hands on children in any way other than to show love. If you should not hit your spouse then you damn well should not hit someone smaller than you because you aren't smart enough to find a better way. Prisons are filled with people who were disciplined at home by parents whose ignorance accomplished nothing positive.

Lets do away with the lets go brannons and act like grown ups who can figure out a better way to communicate. When I blessedly left the small town I grew up in to expand my horizons and frankly find a place I fit because I never did there, although there were and still are, very good people still there. I did not venture far enough for a while but then I found my way to places with less tunnel vision, then realized perhaps I can be who I want to be anywhere. If I have offended anyone with this commentary I won't apologize for it because I am not in charge of how you react. I have spent most of my life trying to be a bearer of light and good will but we all have our breaking point and I have reached mine. I include myself when I state this. Be better, do better. The world does not revolve around any one person, it revolves around ALL of us. This year no amount of fireworks, patriotic songs, parades, red white and blue, along with flag waving citizens will make this celebration mean anything unless we all are willing to be better representatives of this grand geography because the world is watching and some of them are turning away. Peace out!

The Peace Seeker

All humans have a longing for something. It can be as simple as a good night sleep or a vacation to a tropical island (yes please). We can even desire an evening out without kiddos ( good luck if you are a single mom without a support system) or to make enough money with one full time job to live a simple life. All of these things should be attainable in this country but it seems only the elite few can afford these simplicities without incurring debt. There are those who do possess nice homes, cars, frequent vacations, a closet filled with expensive clothes and the list goes on but few do not own such luxuries without credit card debt and owing their soul to the corporate banking industry. How about peace? What will it take, what price must we pay in order to attain it?

While I desperately try not to use ageism as a means of stressing a point, I find that people cannot detach from technology long enough to develop strong communication and language skills and certain generations will have college debt that they will be hard pressed to repay. There are those who seem to have difficulty realizing that a committed relationship takes work and their happily ever after depends on their ability to work through their problems, be adults and actually spend time with their children before they grow up and become self involved too. My generation is busy finding fault with the younger generation, forgetting that in our own youth we were frowned upon for wearing hip hugging bell bottoms, pot smoking, guys with long hair, make love not war mentality. Those much older find fault with everyone younger than them forgetting that they are the ones who will be left taking care of them in their old age.

My hope is in children. They just want to be happy, well fed, loved and safe. That is what all children all over the world long for yet, many adults seem to think that is too much to ask. We place children in cages in deplorable conditions and think thats ok. We have parents who treat each other with disdain, look upon their own children as a burden and not a blessing and begin looking for another "partner" before they bother to end the relationship they are already in. I pass on teenagers. They are a bundle of hormones and parental and school expectations that they fear they cannot live up to.

We as a society are failing in our divisiveness. The last four unrelenting years of politics has lent us to argue, accuse and insult the left, the right and everything in between and this is no exception in the white house to the point of getting nothing done. The death count keeps rising worldwide because those who haven't the capacity to control their anger, bigotry or hatred, enter schools, places of worship and just about anywhere, guns a blazing, trying to take as much human life as their twisted rage and multiple round weapons will allow before finally taking their own life, or police officers, risking their own lives, bring them down. Just an FYI, the second amendment gives you the right to bear arms but not the right to take lives because you're a hateful moron!

We worship symbols over people, use religion as a weapon to wield over those we find fault with but fail to look within. We are a world of color, varying sexual preferences and no amount of bigotry and bullying is going to change that. Do I seem a bit miffed? Bingo! I am so tired of this oppressing feeling of despair. I consider myself to be a compassionate person, a loving and giving person. I just cannot wrap my head around such utter hatred!  It is a sad state of affairs when people my age act like schoolyard bullies on social media because they disagree with someone else's opinion. I have been guilty a time or two of engaging but draw the line at certain behavior.

There are those who rise above all this and try to be a light in the darkness in the world. I applaud you and strive to be like minded. My hope is still with children, if we allow them to retain their innocence and do not indoctrinate them into a negative mindset. My wants and longings are simple. I want a simple space to call my own, to spend time with my sweet grandchildren and family as well as friends who I consider family and most of all I want peace. Inner peace is my safe haven. No matter all the challenges life may hold, I will always remain a peace seeker.

The Age of Wisdom

When I was 13, I knew that I was not an ordinary teenager and that opinion didn't much change in the coming years. I did not fit in with the "in" crowd and didn't really want to. I created a world of my own imagining to make life bearable in the small town that I lived in that I just couldn't seem to embrace. As I moved through the trials and tribulations of high school my only thought, other than music and writing as a release of angst, was to plan my escape from the town I grew up in and never really felt a part of. How was I to know that my escape would not be very far reaching and that I would remain within 30 miles of where I grew up, would marry way too young and have two lovely daughters, leaving all my youthful dreams of the future I had planned far behind.

Do I have regrets? Yes, I do. I regret not attaining my degree, although I have taken many classes and attained a few certifications throughout the years. I wish that I would have traveled more and experienced cultures different than what I am used to, although I did move to a large city with a multicultural population and experienced as well as embraced, diversity and made friends who I will have throughout my life, whom I consider family. Although I truly loved vocal music performance and acting which I returned to well into adulthood, I regret not having the discipline to continue playing the piano and guitar, which I believe I now would have enjoyed. I have lately taken up drumming, for healing, sound therapy and an emotional release, in which I have met an amazing and diverse group of wonderful souls. I however, do not regret being at my mother's bedside as she uttered her last breath on earth as well as my father. If I had lived farther away, this might not have been possible. I believe that although these were moments of sadness, they were also moments that I will forever cherish and consider a gift. I also do not regret having my daughters and even though we have had our moments, we love and support each other and our connection will always remain. I could not imagine being a world apart from my three grandchildren.

Life has become a system of emotional, physical and spiritual checks and balances. The longer you are among the world of the living, the more you experience both good and bad. I have learned to embrace the happiness and joys of life while learning to tolerate and attempt to rise above the sorrows and disillusionment. We live and learn, grow and develop or we remain stagnant and time will ultimately continue to move on whether we are ready or not to face the reality of what that inevitably means. I no longer wish for the things of my impetuous youth. For everything that happened on my life's path, was meant to happen and what truly matters, is what I have learned and taken from these experiences and how far I have come since that time ever so long ago, when my future seemed so full of hope and promise. I am not rich or famous but I am wealthy in family and friendships. I do not need universal fame in order to be important. I have my talents and capabilities and I am a compassionate soul who cares for others and am also humble in the presence of those who are far greater in those capacities than I.

I am now at an age of rediscovery and experiencing yet another of life's transitions. The path is not always a smooth one but nothing easy is as well appreciated as attaining a hard fought and won goal. I now understand the old adage "With age comes wisdom". I have learned more with each passing year, about myself and others and I hope to continue on this journey of self discovery and explore all the possibilities that the future holds. For to be truly wise, we must seek knowledge as there is much to be learned and time does not stand still and wait for us to embrace it's many lessons.

Drumbeats

Sound therapy is an effective way of raising our vibration or state of consciousness to allow our body and soul to heal and recharge our inner batteries. For those of you naysayers, you need to try it before poo pooing it. There are many therapies that compliment modern western medicine and many enlightened physicians and therapists will recommend these alternatives as many of them are active participants. A good number of my clients are medical professionals and have seen firsthand, the positive effects these therapies have on their patients and clients. It is my experience as a healing energy practitioner and teacher, that this is indeed, very helpful to those seeking additional and sometimes "outside of the box" kind of treatments and it is amazing what a difference these enhancements can be in the lives of those who actively pursue natural means of increasing and maintaining better physical, mental and emotional health.

One of the sound therapies I have started to embrace is the art of drumming. I have participated a few times now in a local drum circle which is always an amazing experience. There are key drummers with experience who lead the masses and a very energetic founder whose light force energy encourages the drummers to follow him on his journey to a place of pure joy and the hypnotic sounds of the drumbeats, the beauty of the dancers and hooper's movement and the occasional sound of rattles and tambourines.

My favorite place is located on a peninsula surrounded by a lake during a full moon. It is quite the walk to get there but it is well worth it. A bonfire is lit when darkness falls and there is dancing around the fire as the energy soars and the rhythm of the drumming increases. A euphoria takes hold and you become elevated with the beauty of sound and movement and the wonderful supportive camaraderie of the circle of those, who only want to leave behind their worries and stress and just enjoy a moment of happiness and inner peace which transcends us beyond our earthly obligations and responsibilities. We are diverse, this group of business professionals, artists, engineers, therapists, whoever decides to grace the circle with their presence. There are those who are broken and struggle with addictions, physical limitations, mental and emotional health issues, family obligations and we are all welcomed.

There are no politics at the circle, no judgment or expectations other than we share in the joy and healing which this circle of drummers, dancers, hoopers and even onlookers have come to look forward to the magic under the light of the full moon and the rhythm of the drumbeats.

I dedicate this heartfelt blog to Elmore, Verge and those enlightened ones who lead the circle of drummers and inspire us to find joy in the healing rhythms of drumming.

Divisive Nation

The world is a puzzling place at the moment.Never have I witnessed such dissention among Americans in all my many years upon the planet. Name calling, threats, accusations, snarling, backbiting...I think I've made my point here. We have become a nation divided by political views, race, religion and whatever else ignites one's anger and indignation. Social media, news, reality television, all of which only acerbates the escalating anger of the masses and forces one to take sides, protest, shake our fists and raise our voices.

Does any of this actually accomplish anything? Do symbols matter more than humanity? Does taking a knee during the national anthem truly offend us? If so, we do not have our priorities straight in my humble opinion. We as a nation are backsliding into a mentality that judges all who do not agree with us disfavorably and we bravely call any and everyone out who is not on the same page and then the mudslinging begins. There are those who have a great deal of courage behind a keyboard or cell phone and throw caution to the wind when spewing forth verbal attacks based on differing views and then will even stoop so low as to launch attacks based on one's physical appearance and age. I don't know about anyone else but frankly, I have had enough. It is hard to be a light and a visionary when adults who should know better and should set an example of exemplary behavior for our country's youth, including their own children and grandchildren, become the bullies we try to keep out of the schoolyard.

Never have I witnessed such disrespectful behavior from our nation's highest office. I have no problem with others who do not share my views respectfully, as we do live in what is supposed to be a free nation. I, however, have zero tolerance for hatred or violence aimed toward anyone no matter their politics, race, sexuality, religion or social status. We now have resorted to misquoting the constitution to further our own agenda and bemoan it is our right, while denying the rights of others. We have politicians calling out a lynch mob for certain political figures while turning a blind eye to the misdeeds of others. We have news channels that spew more venom than a rattlesnake and call themselves professional journalists. We fear what we do not understand and therefore, point fingers and lay blame rather than educate ourselves before engaging in verbal or physical warfare.

What is the answer to all of the above? Guns are not the answer, rather becoming the problem. I am not suggesting ones sacred second amendment rights be taken away, rather the ease of attaining a weapon be more stringent to avoid as much as possible, guns in the hands of those who should never possess them in the first place. A responsible gun owner should have no problem with this. Perhaps we learn how to calmly and effectively communicate with those we disagree with and see the value of their opinion as long as they can carry on respectful dialogue. Let us remember that the Civil War has long since ended and waving the confederate flag does not symbolize honor and respect, rather sends a blatant message of racial injustice that needs to end once and for all.

Isn't everyone tired of all the needless battles while we try to keep this country and its inhabitants safe from harm? I am even finding some members of the military to be filled with hatred and rage toward anyone who does not see things their way. I respect and have supported veterans and the organizations that support them. I do not now nor will I ever respect violent and threatening statements and actions that not only demean those with whom you are communicating but it says even less about you. Let's try supporting and uplifting each other instead of tearing each other down. In the face of world terrorism, lets not give strength to those who seek to destroy us by destroying each other. Let us unify instead of dividing. I love my country but wish we could be the kind of nation we are capable of instead of the embarrassment we are becoming. We don't need to "Make America Great Again" We need to look within and make ourselves better or we will be responsible for our own demise.

I try to be a beacon of positive light but it is a battle and I am determined to keep darkness out and let my light shine. Our country is not just geography, landscapes, symbols and landmarks but the most important commodity we have is humanity. Let us strive to pay homage to the beauty of what the freedom so many have fought and died for truly represents so that "We the People" can enjoy freedom and justice for all who live in these UNITED States.

The Healing of a Nation

The world is a puzzling place at the moment. We have all been thrust into the abyss of a presidential election year that has been the most cutthroat of any I have ever witnessed in all my many years upon the planet. Name calling, threats, accusations, snarling, backbiting...I think I've made my point here. We have become a nation divided by political views, race, religion and whatever else ignites one's anger and indignation. I have no problem with others who do not share my views as we do live in what is supposed to be a free nation. Babette the Reikitty

Such a face! There are many kinds of pet owners, those who can't be without one, those who are allergic and those who prefer dogs over cats as they find them to be "friendlier". This is just my opinion and while I appreciate their cuteness and faithfulness, I also find them to be a bit needy for my taste. I like the self sufficiency of my feline companion and her ability to show love and affection (on her terms) and be dismissive and allow me to have time to myself without needing constant attention. I admire that in a pet frankly.

As a Reiki and healing arts practitioner, I find it very necessary to have as much peace and tranquility in my home as possible. When clients come for a healing session, dear old Babs makes herself scarce until the session is over, then, as if on cue, she appears and allows clients to pay attention to her, or not, whichever they please. I think she feels that the healing is not complete until she makes an appearance. She is probably right.

There are those who have doubts as to the healing qualities that animals possess but I know better.
Have you ever noticed your pets staring at a spot on the wall, avoiding a certain room in the house, or even avoiding certain people they may come in contact with? I never ignore my cat when she seems to "warn" me of something or someone to stay clear of, or gravitate to, whatever the case may be. Animals have a heightened sense of their surroundings and when they give warning, we would do well to take heed.

Native Americans have long since had a healthy respect for the intuition of animals. There is a reason why they choose animal totems to guide them in their daily lives. Humans possess intuition but on a very different level than animals. Many cultures find animals to be sacred and a gift from the spirits. That is how I feel about my furry friend, Babette.

When I am not feeling the healthiest in body and spirit, she lays on me or near me to "heal" me and it usually works wonders. I always feel better when petting her and when she reaches out her paw to express her love and unconditional acceptance, I melt a little inside. Call me a pushover but I never feel judged or that any more than love and affection are needed from me. People however, are not always so easy to please.

Being a lightworker has brought much joy and meaning in my life and besides my family and close friends, so does my dear Reikitty Babette. She is now 15 years old and I cannot bear to think of the day she will no longer be with me in this world. Pets are family as much as our human family members and often cause us less stress. May every pet owner be kind and gentle and remember that our animal companions give as much to us as we give to them and sometimes, maybe even more.

Happy Birthday Miss America

The land of the free and the home of the brave, or so they say. Some may not agree with this time honored statement but if you compare our freedom and democracy with other countries, we actually have it pretty good my fellow Americans.
Let's face it, the world in general needs some work. Let us start by ending hatred, hunger, violence, abuse and financial devastation. These are all fixable and there are solutions to end these problems worldwide. However, we just need to do one thing...Compromise!  It begins with listening to one another and actually communicating in a effective and positive manner. One can wave the flag and becry the injustices we think we suffer from but my opinion is, people seem to listen harder when you speak softly and without judgment and condemnation. Let us all spend more wisely, judge others less harshly and work more effectively as a nation to end poverty, hunger, healthcare reform and violence.

It seems, we Americans tend to love the drama of negativity. Perhaps less reality tv and deal with reality off screen, cause we all know reality tv is a bit, shall I say, enhanced. Quit texting for 5 seconds and actually speak to someone in person for a change. Disconnect from our cell phones long enough for a personal exchange with a human within close proximity of you. Am I saying this technology is necessarily a bad thing? No, because I use all of the above but try to stay connected on a personal level with people whom I care about and do business with. If you ask me to lunch and spend most of your time texting or on your cell, I am going to haul my butt out the door because you have been beyond rude and don't deserve my time and attention.

Please stop blaming the plight of lost manners and poor behavior on our youth. Where do we think they learn this from? I have seen more moronic behavior and bad attitudes from adults than I have ever seen from children. I do not play into the "back in my day" BS either. Adults keep blaming the generation before and we need to just shut up and set a good example. The good old days are gone so quit reliving them and worry about the here and now. I am no longer in high school and don't want to go back. I have no misconceptions of how wonderful life "used" to be. We need to focus on the life we are currently living and deal with our problems in the present because, the "good old days" weren't always so great. We still had wars, domestic violence (keeping the little lady in line) child abuse (erroniously called discipline) racial unrest, murders, rapes, incest and the list goes on. The only reason we are more aware of these issues today is due to the media reporting everything and anything.

Want America to be better? Be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. The government isn't perfect and neither are we. Love your country? Prove it! Volunteer to help worthy organizations, support our neighbors instead of tearing them down, be a positive instead of a negative voice in the community, stop whining and start doing something. There are amazing citizens who make a difference every day in their communities and we should applaud them. Start putting positive posts on your facebook page instead of hateful and negative ones because frankly, I am getting sick of them.

Let us all love this country the way it deserves. Set aside our differences, political and religious views and combine energies to make this a country we can be proud to call our home. It is our responsibility to make it the best that it can be. As this Fourth of July celebration approaches, let us all take pause to remember why we honor this day in the first place. Bitter Sweet May

We wait throughout the winter season, amid freezing temperatures, snow and ice covered roads which create hazardous driving conditions, endure post holiday blahs and long for the sweetness of spring. March welcomes in the season we long for but as any of us who live in the unpredictable Midwest know, March can and does come in like a lion. April can be lovely but there is still more likely than not, a chill in the air. May can bring equal parts of warmth, sunshine and a hint of summer.

For me, May is my favorite month of the spring season. Blossoms abound and the scent of flora and fauna intoxicate my senses, as I long for invigorating walks in nature, appreciating her colorful display designed by the most brilliant designer in the universe...Mother Nature. May is also the birthday month of my dearest friend of twelve years. We have had many adventures and will have many more I am sure.

May also holds bitter sweet memories of my parents, whom I dearly miss. My mother's birthday would be May 19th and my father's May 20th. My mother was a transplanted southern belle who still had a gentle lilt to her voice. I admit to having my moments with mom in my youth but any negative, rebellious feelings have long since passed and I came to respect and love her dearly. She was a marvelous grandmother and she is dearly missed by those who loved and still do love her. I am amazed that it has been almost twenty years since her passing and I cannot help but feel a bit envious at times when others of my age enjoy the company of their mother's. Mother's Day means even more, not only
because I am a mother myself but this year, my oldest daughter will enjoy her very first Mother's Day. It is a time of joy, yet, I still have a stirring in my heart for my own mother.

How can I describe my dad? He was energetic, silly, sometimes exasperating and stubborn but he also was a social butterfly, good dancer, animal lover and had the huts pah to jump out of a plane at the tender age of 80 (which scared the life out of his daughters) and continued to do so until he was 85, stating "If George Bush can do it at 80, so can I". I believe the town he resided in is a bit quieter without him and I hope he, as well as my mother, are remembered as fondly by others who knew them as they are by their family.

This year, I will bake a cake for them both and wish them a "heavenly" birthday. I hope they look down favorably upon my creative and caring spirit and give a blessing to myself, my sisters and our children and now their great grandson.

May is a time of transformation and transition with cherished memories and the promise of hope and inspiration. For all the special days and special people both here on earth and beyond...celebrate May!

The Art of Healing

There are many ways in which the human body can heal itself. We may seek the knowledge of traditional medical professionals but we must also learn to listen to what our bodies tell us and take responsibility for our own health and well being.
When we seek treatment from our physicians or specialist, we must also take into consideration that other forms of treatment can and do enhance our ability to overcome certain illness and disorders, both physically and mentally.

I firmly believe that everyone should visit a nutritionist at one point in their lives, as what we consume plays a heavy role in a positive, healthy lifestyle. Some of the foods we eat can even be a factor in some disorders and diseases. I would highly recommend that every heart, cancer, and patients with digestive disorders spend quality time with a nutritionist and heed their advice. A good physician understands that they are not the sole answer to most medical issues.

A healthy diet, weight control and exercise (I need to improve those last two) are the ying and yang of daily maintenance to ensure good health. Find a fitness program that works for you and modify fitness programs for those with health issues. If you are not able to do this on your own, get yourself a membership to a fitness center.
If finances are an issue , many of these establishments offer affordable rates and the membership is cheaper than medical bills due to poor health and excess weight.

Holistic health practitioners offer vast knowledge on the subjects of natural healing through the use of vitamins, oils, herbs and offers clients a means of healing without the chemicals found in many pharmaceuticals. For those who seek to work with their physician and a holistic health practitioner, make sure to keep both health care providers informed of any medications prescribed to avoid harmful interaction.

Therapeutic massage is not only very relaxing (well, deep tissue can be pretty intense but purposeful) but works to keep our body in balance through capable hands working the muscles and tissues of our body and reduce stress which can put us at risk of serious illness. I recommend a visit to a great massage therapist once a month at least. It is good for your body and soul.
Note to massage therapists who are guilty of this: I have heard more than a few clients discuss their dismay at looking forward to a wonderful massage, only to have their therapist talk and talk about their problems and hardships. Not only is this unprofessional but it is extremely disrespectful to your client, who comes to you and pays for your services. You are THEIR therapist, they are not YOURS!

We will now go on to what many consider the "gray" matter of healing practices.
Reiki is the practice of energy healing through placement of hands to work with the bodies energy centers to assist clients balance the "chakra" system. This form of healing can bring about awareness, inner peace and tranquility and assists in bringing about good "Chi". There are skeptics but as a Reiki Practitioner myself, I find this practice to be highly effective and frankly, life changing. The term Reiki means "universal life force energy". This practice originated in Japan and has expanded over the years to reach out to other countries. When east meets west, good things can happen. I could go on to explain more about this wonderful art of healing but that would be another article in itself. There is much information concerning Reiki and it's healing attributes. I highly recommend that everyone try Reiki at least once in their lives but remember, you must be willing to accept the healing offered without reservation in order for it to be the most effective. Imagine going to your dentist for treatment and refusing to open your mouth. We all must be active participants when it comes to our own health and well being.

We can aid in our good health by keeping a less toxic home. Natural materials, fibers and clean air filtration are a wonderful enhancement to aid in our health. We can even create a more positive environment with the paint colors we choose as well as a less toxic choice which can be found at most establishment which sell paint products.
For instance, while purple is a vibrant color, I could not image bright purple walls in my bedroom being a sleep aid. Perhaps an accent wall in a less bright color would be lovely but I envision, sage green, taupe, lavendar or colors which create a peaceful atmosphere. Fabrics that are soft and plush create a feeling of comfort and ease when trying to relax and de stress. The environment we live and work in, aid in keeping us on an even keel.

Relationships can be just as toxic as our environment or a disease which invades our body. Anyone in the health care and mental health profession will tell you to detoxify your body (and soul) of anything which causes you harm. Unhealthy relationships are no different. This is not to say your should never speak to your family members again if they are the culprit but you must take charge of how an unhealthy association effects you. You need to set boundaries and limitations and be firm about it. You may also need to look at your own contribution in this matter. Life is too short not to surround yourself with those who are positive and supportive instead of parasitic and negative. Love yourself enough to set necessary boundaries and if counseling is needed than seek it immediately.

We are all mortal and will fall victim to the end of life at some time but until then, let us all take our health seriously and do what we need to in order to live the best quality of life that we can while we take up residence upon this earth.

The Wonderful Thing About Teeger

Ah, the bliss of being a grandparent! Love them. spoil them and hand them over to their parents. When I look at my grandson, Teegan, I see a world of possibilities to carry on the family genetics. Does this sound too scientific? Perhaps but my intentions are not at all based in such logic and reasoning. I simply have hope that a member of our family lineage will bless the world we live in with something we have very little of in these troubled times....Hope, compassion, honesty and community spirit. We as a society are sadly lacking in these values and it is indeed troubling.

As I look into the face of my innocent grandson, I see what can be, what I so desperately wish humanity can achieve and I extend this invitation to the very young and less tainted souls among us to bring about this metamorphosis within our earthbound plane. Why can we not see every child as we see our own children and grandchildren? We all enter this world as innocents and how we choose to contribute to it's success or failure is purely up to us.

We all possess the tools which are necessary to achieve our goals and the irony in this statement is that there are many whom we may find "lacking" in certain areas of life, who, through sheer strength and determination, move past many of us considered more fortunate, to achieve greatness in what is most important, kindness, generosity and integrity. I could not ask for more from my grandson.

Let us all work together to ensure a bright future for all our children and grandchildren. Teach them to respect all living things and to save judgment for those entities whose power is greater than ours. Love is greater than hate and giving is more of a blessing than receiving.

My dear grandson is borne of those who see his possibilities and will guide him gently to achieve his life goals. May he always feel loved and accepted for who he is and not what others expect him to be. Mostly, that he can hold on to just a bit of that wonderful childlike innocence that I find so endearing. For the most wonderful thing about Teeger is, that he is our only one.

Resolution or Revolution 2012

While reflecting upon the year 2011, I have to say it was "interesting" to say the least.
My home state of Wisconsin has been robbed and pillaged by our Governor, leading us into the worst unemployment history in more than two decades. Some of those "God fearing" right wing radicals decry the assault on his character and portray him as the martyr who was willing to be hated by the few to save the masses. Boy, did that backfire!

I do believe the recall vote has shown this to be quite the opposite. Let me also share my viewpoint on the tea party. First of all, I don't quite get the analogy...Nary of one of these citizens have ever so much as offered me a cup of tea. I also do not think I like their party or believe their truths to be quite "true". Can we just get normal people in office who do not have radical "all or nothing" viewpoints and represent all who reside in their jurisdiction? Why does the cost of living continue to skyrocket, while wages for most of us remain stagnate or for some, have plummeted? Health care should be affordable to all who need it. Isn't it cheaper for us to be healthy?

I have noticed that people who need the most public assistance, also seem to have the most children. I do not believe that anyone has the right to tell someone how many children they should have but if you can't support them...just some common sense here. Oh, and we bail out banks but no one can get a loan to buy a home. Rentals rates are soaring and landlords get richer, yet house after house sits and awaits an owner to give it TLC. Wouldn't the banks be better off renting or offering a rent to own policy rather than letting these homes sit making no one any money...just sayin.

Who else is tired of being taxed to death? For those of us who pay in every year while some receive thousands in payment, I ask you, does this make any sense? Get rid of the IRS and find a better and less confusing means of taxation. No single entity except for the big "G' should have that much power!

War! Yes, I support those who serve but I do not always support the amount of time we spend trying to assist countries (anywhere in the middle east) which have been in battle since before Jesus and unless a nuclear warhead lands on them, this will not change once our troops leave. Want to send a message, quit supporting their economy...worldwide!

As for the 2012 doomsday prophecy, I see change a comin and in the wise words of Karen Walker (or sometimes Anastasia Beaverhousen) we better hunker down, grab a bottle and pray for daylight! Unless of course we join those who are sick and tired of our government screwing things up and overspending our money (yes Republicans, you are just as guilty) keeping some of us impoverished while some keep spinning gold from the looms of corporate greed.

My wish for 2012 is forward thinking leadership, a sound economy, healthcare and a boom in the housing market and no more attacks on citizens who just want to do their job to the best of their ability and be able to support themselves and their families without being attacked by those who should be representing them (hear me Mr. Walker?) and last but not least...Let's treat each other a little better people. Respecting others is respecting yourself.

Happy 2012. It will be a better year if we make it that way.

Splendor at Dusk

I do so love Autumn and often sit outside on my deck in the wee hours of the morning or just as the sun takes her leave and evening beckons. I wrap myself in a blanket or don a jacket, as I savor the beauty of nature and cannot bear the thought of a time when it becomes far too cold and unbearable to do so. I savor my coffee or tea in which a swirling steam emanates from my cup. There is such peace and tranquility in these moments.

The only sounds are the symphony of birds and the rustling of leaves just before they shed their autumn finery. The crispness in the air sends a shiver within me, yet I savor the coolness upon my face as I bundle closer within the welcoming warmth of my covering, as if an angel has wrapped its arms around me to shield me from that which is not of nature but that which keeps me from appreciating its beauty.

To me, this is the most beautiful of seasons and my favorite time of day is dusk. There is nothing I relish more than the sight of the sun setting behind the trees. It is almost as if it is trying to sneak away before I can catch a glimpse of it. Sometimes, I hold my breath as I gaze upon the sight before me. For me, this is a spiritual experience and I pause to thank the powers that be for this special time that I share with nature.

The colors are so magnificent and while there is such peacefulness, a radiant energy engulfs me. I find myself wondering if those I love are capturing this special time of day and feeling as I do. I hope so.

For those of you who have not taken the opportunity to marvel at this glorious sight, not because you have never seen it before but because you have never really seen it as I do. I advise all who walk upon this earth to sit outside, bundle up, perhaps take a cup of coffee or tea with you, and prepare to be inspired by the beauty that is before you. The Splendor at Dusk.

The Ascention of the Purple Dragon

There are those among us who can never be forgotten. We may only know these special souls for a short time here on earth and it seems as though we have known them for a lifetime.
A young man named Cameron is one of those souls. How many thirteen year olds love Mel Brooks movies, never disrespect their parents, can easily converse with anyone of any age and has the ability to discuss a variety of topics with adept humor and clarity? It is difficult not to be under the spell of this marvelous creature with his infectious laugh and angelic face.

It is hard to understand why the fates would decide to cast a spell upon this dear one and inflict upon his youthful body this negative entity called cancer. Unless you are the parent of a child with this diagnosis, you will never understand the devastation it leaves upon your heart and soul. Throughout the entire process of surgery, treatment and medications as well as various forms of healing, this courageous young man remained hopeful and was an example of strength and endurance. His loving Papa, Henry, never gave up on his healing and tirelessly and lovingly cared for his beloved son. Family and friends lent support and a thousand origami cranes were proof of friendship and dedication from a lovely flower named Lily.

An amethyst dragon pendant to symbolize love and healing was a gift of love and was always worn by Cameron as a reminder of the support of those who loved him. Try though he did with his ever present Papa and the blessings from family, friends and even a few strangers, his earth bound body could no longer fight the battle any longer and this amazing spirit made his peaceful exit to a world which beckoned from beyond.

On September 14, 2008, the light of this world became a little darker but every now and then a cardinal will appear, or a thought which only he could provide will be a gentle reminder of the existence of his presence and the light of his memory which will never be extinguished.

As the Phoenix rose from the ashes, so too did the purple dragon and as it arose the color turned to the brightest white as a symbol of the highest form of healing, for as he made his way to a place where love is always, he became a white dragon, watching over those who love him still.

With loving dedication to Cameron David Allen
and his amazing Papa Henry

A Tiny Tribute to September

Teegan Ryan Kase

The last days of summer are quickly fading away and the cool crispness that announces fall's arrival are a reminder of the days ahead. I have always loved autumn and the beauty of it's fiery reds, bright gold and burnt orange hues. I always feel exhilarated as I walk along the pathways surrounded by colorful foliage and the crunching of fallen leaves beneath my footsteps. I never mourn the end of summer as I realize that season's must change, as people must change with the passage of time.

This September marks the beginning of yet another transition within our family with the early arrival of our greatest pre autumn gift. My beautiful grandson, Teegan, entered the hearts and souls of his mother, father, grandparents, aunts and uncles and all else who will learn to know and love him, on the eve of September 3, 2011. There are those who look upon this month with sadness and loss. Yes, a terrible event occured on 9/11 2001, yet I can't help but think the birth of this wonderful child is meant to be a light in the darkness on what is soon to be the tenth anniversary of this tragic event. For every evil there is good, for every sorrow there is joy.

In the months and years ahead, I will celebrate my grandson's birthday with happiness and gratitude. I will respectfully pay tribute to those whose lives were needlessly snuffed out by vengeance and hatred, on yet another anniversary of 9/11. There is another date I will softly mourn on September 14, when another gentle spirit passed beyond the veil of earth to become an angelic spirit. I also rejoice in the honor it was to have known this courageous 13 year old boy. On the eve of the autumn equinox, I will celebrate the coming season with reverance and gratitute for my many blessings.

Appreciate those in your life whom you dearly love and make the most of your time here on earth. Life is among the greatest of texbooks in which we must always strive to learn. Celebrate the coming season and enjoy all of it's offerings. I send love and healing to those who have suffered loss in the month of September as I rejoice in the birthdate of my grandson.

I dedicate these heartfelt words to my grandson Teegan, the victims of 9/11 and their
family's and my guardian angel, Cameron David Allen and his dear father Henry.

The Universal Love Jones

Just when I think the world is becoming a place I have all but given up hope on, something wonderful and unexpected will occur to change my surly outlook. A bad day can be turned around by a simple gesture of kindness or a beautiful sunrise, or sunset. A visit from an estranged friend you haven't seen in ages but have been thinking about, suddenly enters your life and uplifts your spirit. I am always inspired by the kindness and generosity of others and am implored to "pay it forward" to enrich not only the lives of those I may touch in a positive way but to enhance mine as well. Enjoying an evening of solitude and reflection is often a gift to myself.

Today was a day of healing and enlightenment and now darkness has fallen and soon I will sit outside on this end of summer's eve and enjoy the serenity of the night. I love the sounds of all the creatures which create a symphony of music to entertain me as I look up and marvel at the beauty of the sky. There are no stars tonight but the clouds create shapes and patterns as if some heavenly creature is crafting artful sculptures from these billowy formations. There is so much more beyond the plane of our existence. Why can we not appreciate more, the simple gifts that we have been given? I fear materialism has made us less enamored of all the wonders of the universe.

How many great literary works were inspired by all of the above? How many colors inspired by the earth's hues? As my intuitive nature and spiritual awareness strengthen, I have become more appreciative of that which cannot be bought, or which no war could ever conquer and we cannot destroy, though sometimes it seems the inhabitants of this world are trying to do just that. It is time now for me to draw my attention to that which is most important at this moment and that is to just...be.

I have no great romantic love as such no longer interests me, instead I will save my affections for that which surrounds me as I enjoy the beckoning night and the "universal love jones."

Here and After

We all ponder our mortality at certain times in our lives. Children wonder what death really is and find it hard to believe it will ever touch them. There are also times when it does and we all wonder, why? Terminal illness lends it's own version of the art of passing from one world into the next. What would it be like to "know" this awaits you in the near future? Elderly citizens have the weight of impending death upon their shoulders. Some are ready and some are not.

If you do not believe in the realm of spirituality, you may believe that the end is just that. You live, you die and you are nevermore. For those who believe in a higher power, they strive to live as if they are preparing themselves for the next world, a better and more loving world. Do we, or do we not have what is referred to as a "soul"?

I cannot answer that question for anyone else but for me the answer is an absolute "YES"! I have never been one to try to force others to believe as I do and I respect their rights to believe as they wish, as I expect them to respect mine. I do not raise the Bible and make passive quotes and tell people whose lifestyles I may not agree with they will be forever damned, nor will I ever ask them if they have a "close personal relationship with Jesus Christ". Frankly, I don't think that is my, or anyone else's business. Do I believe in a higher power? Yes I do. I believe there are many entities who reside over us. I think spirituality has some gray areas.

I have had my share of saying goodbye (if I am lucky) to those I have loved in this life. We all have, or will, experience this difficult time. The longer we live, the more we lose. Some suffer more loss than others and some of us deal with it better. Whatever path the fates have chosen for me, I resign myself to. I cannot believe anything can be worse than the destruction and devastation of wars, the loss of a child or close family member, the hatred and hostility of humanity and the ravages of grave illness. I will appreciate the beauty of a moonlit night and beautiful sunrise and sunset. I am in awe of the vastness of the oceans and mountains. Nothing is more beautiful than the serenity of nature and the flight of birds.

For all the ugliness that sometimes surrounds us, we can still appreciate the joys of living. There are times when I have no hope for earth's inhabitants but then the unexpected happens and I believe in our purpose all over again. The least bit of kindness and giving, even in small doses could bring about a smile from whatever great power we believe in. For those of you who believe in nothing, I hope you find something to hold on to...for that is the foundation of our strength when we need it most. I guess, I wish for you and everyone, the gift of hope.

Living on the corner of Peace and Tranquility

A home should be our refuge from some of the unpleasantness of life. For some, this is not so but wouldn't it be bliss? The minute we step out the door we must deal with traffic, jobs, car pools, school and sometimes, inclement weather. There are days when I want to curl up and read a good book, watch a favorite movie, or, more often than not...write some thought provoking verbiage. I am not anti social, quite the contrary but I do not always feel like dealing with people, places or things in the world outside my peaceful sanctuary.

In the later years of my half century plus on this earth, I have come to appreciate the sheer pleasure of solitude and looking inward, which is very enlightening and comforting. I love my family and friends dearly and I enjoy their presence when I am with them. There are those who need the buzz of constant activity and interraction. I am not one for large crowds, much preferring a small gathering at my home ( or someone else's). Holiday celebrations are best when there is little fuss and lots of love and laughter.

The day will soon come, when a welcome addition to the family will appear and I will cherish the increased social stimulation that will follow the birth of my first grandchild. There is nothing quite like the sound of a laughing child and yes, sometimes there will be tears to wipe away. I am willing to happily relinquish some of my days as a hermit for some quality time with my growing family.

May our homes be a place where we feel safe and secure as if the very walls breathe a sigh of relief when we walk in the door as if to say"Welcome Home!" Of course it is always nice to extend the courtesy to those we are closest to and invite a new friend or two over for an occasional dinner party. When they ask where I live, perhaps I will direct them to the corner of peace and tranquility, near the intersection of serenity boulevard.

Pathway to the Garden of Enlightenment

Community gardens are a wonderful way to engage in an activity which benefits urban neighborhoods, by careful tending and quenching the thirst of flora and vegetation with much needed H2O. The garden even has plots to produce edibles for the local food pantry. Such is the Meadowood Community Garden and so much more.

The Meadowood Community Garden was established in 2008 with assistance from the Community Action Coalition, providing start up funding as well as direction needed to launch a community garden.

Plot fees from neighborhood gardeners provide funding for items needed to maintain a successful and productive garden. Former garden leader and artist, Sheri Rembert, developed a plan for a children's garden, which included a pathway to make the garden inviting for neighborhood youth. This year the plan was put into action by present garden leader, Leslie Stephany, who then enlisted local mosaic artist, Marcia Yapp, to facilitate the implementation of the pathway.

With Marcia's mentoring, neighborhood youth created individual mosaic stepping stones, which each child (and a few adults) created to reflect their personality and present a colorful, meandering pathway to beckon young gardeners to enter. Two concrete columns have now been added at the entrance to the children's garden and each column will be covered with mosaic tiles.

Wooden fencing was partially donated, the rest purchased with grant funds and has recently been placed around the garden perimeter, which will be treated and painted to further improve the garden's visual appearance, as well as protect the fruits of gardener's labors. This space is not only pleasing to the eye but a symbol of community working together, to create a sacred space which children and adults alike can take pride in. The children's garden has an established strawberry bed, a variety of vegetables and flowers and will soon include blueberries. Children assist in planting and harvesting and are educated as to the value of growing their own food. Seedlings for the children's garden are generously donated annually by the Oakhill Correctional Institution.

There will be an upcoming storytelling in the garden featuring Patsy McKenzie and Kevin Wery who are fellow gardeners and Co-Founders of the "Fairness Awareness Foundation". Scheduled date is pending.

Congratulations fellow gardeners on a job well done, for great leadership and much appreciated volunteers, adults and youth alike. There is no better way to build
community and honor mother earth than to create a place of beauty and provide delicious fruits and vegetables as well as lovely flowers in this urban "garden of enlightenment".
